When to go

Austral summer – from November to March – coincides with wet season, therefore it’s not the best period to visit the country. Furthermore during these months it’s more difficult to see the animals due to thicker and more luxuriant vegetation. Particularly, from December to February rains can be continuous for days, especially in the northern regions, making roads impassable : in that period some lodges located in the area of Okavango, Moremi and Chobe Park are closed down.

Ideal period to visit Botswana is from April to August when days are hot and sunny, skies are clear and nights are fresh or even cold in June and July. During the austral winter, due to the particularly dry climate, it’s easy to spot animals going to the ponds to drink. In addition, September and October are suitable months to travel in the country, even if the weather is usually hot and humid.

What to know

All visitors to Botswana must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months from the day of the departure. Also children must have a passport with photo. Travellers should ensure that there are some blank visa pages in their passport for entry and exit stamps, especially if they plan to go from Botswana to Zambia and Zimbabwe to visit Victoria Falls. We recommend not EU passport holders to verify if a visa is required before traveling to Botswana.

No vaccinations are mandatory for travelers arriving from European Union. However, Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for those who travel to the northern part of the country (Okavango delta).
We highly suggest to consult your doctor or your local vaccinations center before your departure to get more serious and detailed advice.
Air Namibia connects main european airports to Maun, the starting point of your Botswana journey, with a Frankfurt-Windhoek-Maun flight. Moreover, Alitalia, Lufthansa, South African Airways and other carriers fly to Johannesburg, from where Air Botswana operates many connection flights to Maun.

How to get there

Flora and fauna
In Botswana there are about 164 species of mammals, 157 of reptiles, 80 of fish and 550 of birds. It is the ideal environment for hundreds of animal species : lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, foxes, wild dogs, mongooses, jackals, zebras, elephants, rhinoceroses, warthogs, hippos, giraffes, antelopes of various species, oryxes, wildebeest , impalas, buffaloes and many others. There are also various species of reptiles and hundreds of species of colorful birds.

Diversity of the flora is impressive : the Okavango delta is rich in marsh grasses, papyrus, reeds, water lilies, palms and acacias; vegetation changes completely in the Kalahari desert, characterized by bushes, thorny acacias, while in some areas – especially in the Makgadikgadi Pans – grow baobabs. Real lush forests are found only in the north along the banks of the Chobe river.
Over 3000 species of plants and herbs have been catalogued, of which about 650 are edible and used by local populations.
