Departure is at dawn from Maun heading for the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

After a couple of hours drive on dirt roads, we stop for lunch. Afterwards, we go to a place called “Deception Valley” , a magic spot where you are mesmerized by the water mirage.

In the endless desert expanse, you can see cheetahs, antelopes, lions passing from time to time.
The aperitif at sunset takes place in an extraordinary context from a naturalistic point of view, on a soil which is made of red, white and gray sands. The acacia trees on the horizon, together with the typical quiver trees (“Kocurboom”) represent the rarest plants of this immense barren land. The latter is a rare species of trees used by the local Bushmen for making quivers. In the evening our camp is set up and dinner is served at the camp around the fire.

Beyond that, there are numerous species of birds adapted to live in these difficult desertic conditions : in fact they are able to store water reserves that allow them to bear the scorching temperatures of the day and the sharp cold of the night. After a good lunch at the camp, we can relax in the shadow of the tents. Having been informed about behaviours of animals and birds by our guide, we go for our nocturnal game drive. It’s our last night in Kalahari desert camp.

    Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

After breakfast, we go to the Makgadikadi Pans National Park where herds of zebras and wildebeests migrate slowly at the end of winter in anticipation of the rains.
The shimmering salt pans of Makgadikgadi along with the Nxai Pans are believed to be the largest in the world and are the remains of once an ancient lake now dried. During the wet season these pans are part of the most important humid area of Botswana, natural habitat of numerous species of birds and large herds of wild animals. During the tour, we can spot large mammals and various species of birds. We plan to stay in this area in our lodge, Planet Baobab, for two nights. In this part of our journey, there are safari trips in the morning and in the afternoon, more fresh and more suitable times of the day when it is possible to spot animals that go hunting or go to drink water.

The endless landscape is home to some breath-taking attractions such as Baines Baobabs : a cluster of seven ancient baobab trees which are a sight sought by many travellers venturing into the untamed terrain of Botswana. We provide you a packed lunch therefore you have more time to spend in this magnificent ambiance before getting back to lodge.
